I have ZERO artistic talent. That might actually be a bit generous; it could really be in the negative range. (Of note: In a lost verse of “Opposites Attract“, Mr. Seeking Ambition is a classically-trained artist who excels in seemingly All The Mediums.) So, that’s why I was super excited when coloring books for adults became “a thing” – all you have to do was stay inside the lines! I could do that… right?!
My first foray into this brave new world was actually a gift from my dear friend Lyndsay. It was Johanna Basford’s Secret Garden, a ridiculously beautiful world of flora and fauna crying out for color. Lyndsay didn’t know it at the time, but both my neurologist and cognitive therapist had suggested trying out coloring books as a form of cognitive therapy, as well as relaxation. (They should probably start putting coloring books in the package of crap they send you home from the hospital with after neurosurgery. Just a thought!)
I’ve amassed quite a collection so far – ones about cats, Paris, typography, maps… but there’s one that’s become a favorite. Not because the art style is exceptional, or because it’s intellectually challenging, but because it’s strangely soothing to color swear words.
So, as you’ve likely guessed, I’m talking about the book pictured at top: Release Your Anger. There’s nothing quite like coloring away your frustration after spending 53 minutes of your life on hold with Blue Cross/Blue Shield, or the fun of choosing which exact word best describes how you feel about the upcoming election.
I want to share the joy I’ve found with you all… so I’m hosting a giveaway! One lucky reader will be the happy owner of an expletive-filled coloring book – all just by following me on Facebook and/or Instagram, or leaving some bits of wisdom here on the blog. So really, it’s the gift that keeps on giving!
The Rafflecopter runs until Friday, June 10, 2o16 at 5:00PM EST.
