I don’t know about you all, but winter is kicking my skin’s butt. Between the cold, dry air outside and the hot, dry air inside, I’m slowly morphing into the world’s scaliest lizard. And while you’re scrubbing that mental image out of your head, I’ll tell you how I’m fighting back.
One of the goals I have for this year is to religiously practice good self-care when it comes to my face. I’ve always taken really good care of my skin; anyone who knows me can tell you that I apply my sunscreen with a trowel. But when you have a chronic illness, it’s easy to let things fall by the wayside. Unfortunately, this has a compounding effect. When I don’t take care of my skin, it gets dry and “blah” (trust me – this is an actual term used by beauty professionals), and I feel lousy when I look in the mirror.
So, sometime around New Year’s, I snapped myself out of it and started treating myself the way I should again. This happened to be excellent timing, as the folks at Silk Therapeutics sent me some goodies to try.
If you haven’t heard of Silk Therapeutics, they’re a Boston-based company that makes skincare out of… wait for it… silk. Silk protein, which is the primary ingredient in their products, does all the amazing stuff we want beauty products to do to our skin, but without harsh chemicals and synthetic junk. #science
What really resonated with me is the company’s charitable mission of providing their skincare products to oncology patients. The company’s two founders (one is an ovarian cancer survivor) are obsessed with clean skincare – so much so that several of their products have been certified EWGVerified™ by the Environmental Working Group. I can be pretty crunchy-granola at times, so I’m very familiar with the EWG and their strict guidelines – getting a pass from them is not easy!
Serum. Is. Life-changing.
No, seriously. I didn’t discover serum until a few years ago, and I didn’t really “get it’ until after I had been using it incorrectly for a few months – (translation: sporadically!). A good serum really makes a difference in your skin’s hydration. You can wear it alone or under moisturizer depending on how dry your skin is.
I tried Silk Therapeutics’s Purely Radiant Daily Hydrating Serum and am loving it. Just two drops, morning and night, on your face, neck, and décolletage (don’t forget about this part! And yes, I’m aware I sound like Blanche Devereaux.) It absorbs really quickly and has no scent. This is one of the products that’s EWGVerified™ – it only has nine ingredients.
Chemical, not physical, exfoliation is my jam!
If you’re a woman of a certain age, chances are you have purchased a product that shall remain nameless that is comprised of chopped-up nuts and attempted to slough off the top layer of your skin in an attempt to “exfoliate”. If you are still doing this, STOP. DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT COLLECT $200.
When I discovered chemical exfoliation (such as glycolic acids, AHAs, and BHAs), my world was rocked. My skin looked amazing, and there was no painful scrubbing involved!
What I love about Silk Therapeutics’s Renewing Peel is that it’s gentle enough to not be irritating, but strong enough to be effective. It only has five ingredients! I’ve been using it once a week and my skin feels incredibly soft and smooth afterwards. Other peels I’ve used in the past have left my skin red and angry, but this one is really top-notch.
Well, moisturizer. Moisturizer is always next. (I crack myself up!)
Seriously, though – since I’ve started taking just those few simple steps again, I’ve begun to feel a lot better when I look in the mirror.
