In these crazy, mixed-up times we live in, many people turn to music for guidance. However, many popular tunes leave us with more questions than answers. Alert Readers™ may remember the first installment of my exploration of questions asked in songs – and I can no longer ignore the clamoring for Part Two. (Well, “clamoring” might be slightly dramatic, but I am prone to hyperbole. This is the #dealwithit section, after all…)
Anyhow, who am I to deny the people what they want? Without further adieu, I present…
Deal With It: A Definitive, Yet Non-Exhaustive, Rating Of Questions Asked In Songs – PART TWO
Are you that somebody? – “Are You That Somebody?” by Aaliyah
I LOVE this song! It’s so goddamn catchy, and so goddamn weird – WTF is up with the incessant baby laughing in the background? It was on the Dr. Doolittle soundtrack, which explains the giant Eddie Murphy head that floats around, Wizard of Oz-like, in the video. A
Are you gonna go my way? – “Are You Gonna Go My Way” by Lenny Kravitz
This is SUCH a good song. Wherever Lenny wants to go, I’m going. A+
How do you talk to an angel? – “How Do You Talk to an Angel” by The Heights
Welp… I’m guessing it’s pretty similar to regular talking, seeing as how he’s referring to a girl. * barf * This entire song is just awful… which makes it all the more baffling to me that it was nominated for a Grammy. (Thankfully, it lost.) D-
How long has this been going on? – “How Long” by Ace
This question is asked twelve times in this song – they REALLY want to know how long this has been going on. Quite frankly, I don’t blame them one bit. B
Do you really want me, baby? – “Do You Want Me” by Salt-N-Pepa
This song contains one of my favorite lines in history – “Who, me, a tease? Brother, please!” so it automatically gets an A.
Where can I find a woman like that? – “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield
I think we can all agree that Rick has an unhealthy fixation on Jessie’s girl… when he starts whining, “and she’s loving him with that body, I just know it!” I both cringe and want to call 911 at the same time. Instead of looking for a dopplegänger, perhaps he should seek out a therapist. D+
Would I lie to you? – “Would I Lie To You?” by Charles & Eddie
Question asked multiple times, question indirectly answered. I love this song, and apparently so do a ton of other people… I was really surprised by the number of YouTube hits it had! A-
Is she perverted like me? – “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette
You’ll notice that I did not include Alanis’s follow-up question, because I know anyone who knows this song is already singing it in their head. You’re welcome! B
Do you ever feel like a plastic bag? – “Firework” by Katy Perry
Not really. My town just banned plastic bags too, so this is probably a good thing. D
Whatcha gonna do with all that junk / all that junk / inside your trunk? – “My Humps” by the Black Eyed Peas
Well, it’s hard to say. Since the aforementioned banning of plastic bags by my town, and the advent of Pay-As-You-Throw, we’ve really gotten creative with recycling and compost, so the amount of junk in my trunk has decreased a lot.
Oh, wait… this song is about something totally different. I think. F
What burning song questions would you like to see addressed in Part Three? And whatcha gonna do with all that ass, all that ass inside them jeans? (Sorry… I have that song stuck in my head now 🙂 )
Janel
Very interesting. I often just find myself singing along with songs and it isn’t until I hear the younger generation using slang or reference to the song that I really stop and think about the lyrics. Then I think to myself why in the world did the artist say that…..
technichicks
Ahh! RIP Aaliyah. That song is catchy. Now I have it on repeat in my mind.
robin masshole mommy
Ever since Rick Springfield played Lucifer in Supernatural, I can’t even listen to that song. It’s ruined for me. He and Jesse can have a nice life….
sjbraun
Oh my. What a fun post idea! A few years ago, one of my piano students played “Firework.” I usually sing along, but I stopped cold at “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag?” Not the greatest lyric, for sure 🙂
Joely Smith
LOL! I am a music fan – my father made darn sure of it, but I stopped my kids from listening to too much when they were very young due to some of the lyrics. Hummm a song with a question in it … Should I Stay or Should I Go by the clash has to be in the list. I mean someone PLEASE tell this dude what to DO!
emmaeatsandexplores
Haha sometimes I just sing along without thinking about the lyrics – never thought how weird it was that Katy Perry asks if you feel like a plastic bag! And yes, you got me singing the next line of Alanis Morisette
alpluslex
LOL at your plastic bag comment! You are so funny!!

This is such a great blog idea! It was so fun to read 😊 What you said about the black eyed peas song and Katy perry song made me giggle. We have to pay for plastic bags too! X

I also love this one – “Are You That Somebody?” by Aaliyah. One of my favorite songs.
Amber
Some of these are some great songs! I really like Alanis.
Author Brandi Kennedy
This post made me laugh. It’s funny how much we don’t realize is in the music we’re listening to, isn’t it?
Cassandra
I love this post! What a great trip down memory lane with some of these songs. Who knew there were so many songs with questions in them!
The Travel Ninjas
Oh these are some cool songs posing some great questions. Have to say Lenny Kravitz really stands out on this list for me. I give him an A++.
Traveling Well For Less
ROFL! Love your take on the songs. Given that I grew up with Rick Springfield, my interpretation of Jessie’s Girl is completely different than yours.
Maria Magdalena
LOL! I like music and have to work on music everyday. Anyway, I like these songs and I grew up with them
mira pstr
great songs and singer , especially Aaliyah RIP …
Elizabeth (@TangoRaindrop)
Great picks, these. Isn’t it fantastic how music can transport us to somewhere else, help pass the time and just generally elevate the mood (or help us wallow when we feel the need!).
Sarah Bailey
Great song selection for unanswered questions of yours. I never thought about that queries in this songs. Nice topic.
Rose
Lol, we’ll putting me on the spot I can’t think of a song but now I’ll hear it all day from random songs. Songs are something of a fun mystery we all have our own interpretations.
Rachel
I’m not a huge music person but this post was interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Kelly Hartigan
I have heard most of these songs. I never put much thought into the questions, unanswered or otherwise, in songs. I’m sure there are more songs that ask questions, but now that you mentioned it, I can’t think of another one.
Kiwi
So many songs that I love. I didnt realize how many songs have questions in them. Aaliyah is my favorite even with the cooing baby in the background. It doesnt make any sense but it worked!!! LOL
theresasreviews
This is such a funny post. I love being reminded of all of these random songs.
missy35000
I think The Heights lead singer was an extra on 92010 (Donna’s BF?) Agree that song was soo cheezy. Love Lenny’s “Are you gonna go my way”!!
Wanderlust Vegans
I always have about 5 songs on repeat in my head. They randomly just pop up throughout the day.
Allison Rebecca
This is so interesting! I used to love some of these songs and jam out to them but never really listened to the lyrics, definitely makes you think!
amandahrosson
Such a fun and hilarious post! I love the variety of songs you chose too – who knew there were so many unanswered questions in songs?? XD Also every time I hear that first line from “Firework,” I always just want to answer “no” lol.
duffelbagspouse
I love Lenny Kravitz too. I like his style and music.
Sandy N Vyjay
Music is something you turn to, to find answers. However if you end up with questions, than definitely there is a problem.
Milica Momcilovic
Great list! Some of these songs I love so much!
Amber Nelson
Oh I love Aaliyah! I really miss her. I wonder where she would have been today if she were still alive.
Eva / Kid Minds
I think I pretty much gave up on music. I can never find a song I like on the radio.
Heather McMechan
I saw Lenny Kravitz sing this song in his prime. Very cool!
Samantha Lee
“Firework” and “My Humps” are both extremely catchy. I can appreciate all kinds of music, but I definitely get a good laugh out of certain lyrics in songs!
almostindianwife
I love this list! I can’t wait to sit down and watch all of these videos! Thanks for sharing! I love music videos so much! Such a fun way to spend naptime 🙂
Amber
hahahaha, this post made me laugh! A fun read for the morning, and of course brings back memories of songs I haven’t heard in a very long time!
The Everyday Mom Life
Would I lie to you is a great song. I do love how do you talk to an angel though. For different reasons than obviously being about a girl. I think a lot of people wish they could speak to angels generally so they can speak to loved ones again.
Meeta
Yes – Katy Perry and her very valuable question – and to Lenny Kratvitz all I can say is yes I wanna go your way! LOL! A fun post!
Alyssa Ruane
Haha, I liked this post a lot! thanks for having some fun with it, especially the Black Eyed Peas bit. 🙂
Elizabeth O.
I SO enjoyed reading this post! It’s funny but also true to core. Lol. I really find some lyrics funny most of the time especially for the new songs coming out these days.
Aziel Morte
I really love this post and such a great selection of song, Thanks for sharing these song
Cynthia Nicoletti
Great article. I listen to songs and sing along and most of the time I don’t pay attention to what they mean. When I read each Line and video some of the songs I knew It now made sense 🙂 Thank You
Vaishnavi @ Dentmaker
Wow, love the deeper meaning you’re bringing out of your favorite songs. Adds an absolutely new perspective!
Hrakaridi
Some of these are some great songs! I really like Lenny. 🙂
